Eastern Cape Department of Health Bursary Program

The bursary program is designed to increase the number of skilled healthcare professionals in the Eastern Cape by providing financial assistance to deserving students pursuing studies. Bursary recipients will be selected based on the following:

  • alignment with service delivery priorities
  • relevance to the chosen field of study, and
  • academic achievement

The following are fields of study that are considered by the bursary:

  • Clinical Medical Practice
  • Clinical Psychology
  • Dental Assistant
  • Dentistry/ Dental Therapy
  • Dietetics
  • Emergency Medical Care
  • MBChB
  • Nursing
  • Occupational Therapy
  • Optometry
  • Oral Hygiene
  • Orthotic & Prosthetic
  • Pharmacy
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiography
  • Speech Therapy

Successful bursary recipients will receive financial aid for their registration fees, tuition fees, exam fees, prescribed textbooks, meals, and accommodation. They offer two types of bursaries:

  • Full-Time Bursary: For full-time students pursuing undergraduate or postgraduate degrees. Covers 10% of total costs.
  • Part-Time Bursary: For working-class students pursuing studies part-time. Covers registration and tuition fees.

Eligibility – Eastern Cape Department of Health Bursary Requirements

To qualify for the Eastern Cape Department of Health Bursary, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident living in the Eastern Cape Province.
  • Have a strong academic record from your Matric exams.
  • Be pursuing a full-time degree in a healthcare field that aligns with our department’s priorities.
  • Demonstrate financial need.
  • NOT be a recipient of any other bursary

By accepting the bursary, you commit to working for the Eastern Cape Department of Health for a specified period after graduation.

How To Apply

Interested candidates will have to download and complete their Eastern Cape Dept of Health Bursary Application Form. The application forms can also be obtained from and submitted to respective Eastern Cape Department of Health district offices.

After completion of the form, applicants are required to submit clear copies of the listed supporting documents along with their completed application form. The required documents are:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Matric mid-year and latest results, if currently in Matric
  • Latest academic results, if at the tertiary level
  • Proof of application/ admission to a tertiary institution
  • Proof of physical address
  • Parents/guardians’ proof of income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ proof of pension income or grant/ death certificate if deceased) (certified copies)
  • Medical certificate if disabled

If any of the required documents are missing, your application will not be considered as they are all compulsory. Applicants should also check the Eastern Cape Department of Health website for specific requirements related to their chosen field of study.

Eastern Cape Department of Health Bursary Closing Date

The deadline for the Eastern Cape Department of Health Bursary 2025 is October 31st. Submit your application before the deadline to ensure it’s considered. Late applications will not be accepted.
