About The MQA Bursary 

To encourage more students to pursue employment in the mining and minerals industry, the Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) bursary program was first developed. In the present day, the bursary program continues to assist students by providing them with the option to pursue these careers in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Colleges and Higher Education Institutions (HEI), and universities of technology. The bursary scheme helps cover the following:

  • Full tuition and registration fees
  • Residence fees or out-of-residence living costs
  • Books; stationery
  • Toolkit allowance per bursar per semester

Field of Study For The MQA Bursary

Interested applicants can get the MQA bursary application form as it is available to students enrolling in universities, Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, and universities of technology. The MQA bursary program only funds the following qualifications at universities and universities of technology:

  • Boilermaker
  • Fitting (incl: Machinery)
  • Motor Mechanic (Diesel)
  • Instrumentation Mechanic

  • Rigger Ropesman

Note: Each year, the MQA may allocate up to 20% of the bursary funds to worthy applicants who are employed or unemployed and who wish to pursue studies outside of the previously mentioned qualifying fields.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants will have to fulfill the following criteria to be qualified for the MQA bursary:

  1. Applicants must be a citizen of South Africa
  2. Applicants must be unemployed when applying and must remain unemployed all through the period of their studies
  3. Applicants must be currently in Grade 12 or have completed Grade 12
  4. Applicants must intend to study for either of the degrees listed above.
  5. Applicants must intend to study at the University, University of Technology, or TVET College across South Africa

Note: Applications will not be considered if the applicants fail to satisfy these criteria.

Preferences are given by the MQA to students who are:

  • Students living in rural communities
  • Those who have applied at their local tertiary institutions.
  • Those who have a strong academic record
  • Those who are termed as HDI (Historically Disadvantaged Individuals)
  • Those who are financially needy with a combined household income of less than R600 000 per year (MQA will verify the household income)
  • Female students

  • Fill out the application form electronically and not by hand.
  • After filling out the form, applicants will have to rename the file with their full name and surname.
  • Attach the required documents to your application form after scanning them. Ensure the documents are named properly before sending them in one mail to: bursaries@mqa.org.za
  • Your full name, surname, and ID number must appear in the subject line of your email.

The following are the documents applicants are required to attach to their application. They are as follows:

  • ID document (certified copy)
  • Grade 11 final report or Matric mid-year report, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
  • Proof of acceptance at a University, University of Technology, or TVET College for 2024, if currently in Matric (on institution letterhead)
  • Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
  • Full tertiary academic record, if currently studying (on institution letterhead)
  • Parents’ or guardians’ ID documents (certified copy)
  • Parents or guardians’ proof of household income (latest payslips if employed, affidavit if unemployed, affidavit if not in contact with 1 or more parents, proof of SASSA payment if applicable, death certificate if deceased)

Also, ensure the documents attached are certified copies as any mistake can lead to the disqualification of the bursary application.

MQA Bursary 2024 Application Deadline 

The closing date for the MQA Bursary 2024 application is 23 October 2023. Apply before the closing date to ensure your application is considered. Submission of application after this date will not be accepted
