Carers Support Grant 2025 – If you are a carer, this is an opportunity to get a grant as the Department of Social Protection is providing the carers support grant to carers. This annual payment given to carers can be used for anything even if you wish to pay for respite. The article provides vital information that will aid the successful application for the grant.
What is the Carers Support Grant About
Carers Support Grant is an annual payment made to carers who receive Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance. The Department of Social Protection provides the Carer’s Support Grant. This grant was created with the intent to provide support to those who provide full-time care for a family member or friend in need. This also includes those with disabilities, illnesses, or other conditions that require ongoing assistance. Recipients can use the grant for any purpose and choose how to utilize it.
Eligibility Requirements For The Carers Support Grant
To qualify for the Carers Support Grant, carers will have to meet the following requirements. They are as follows:
- Aged 16 or over
- Ordinarily residents in Ireland
- Caring for the person on a full-time basis
- Caring for the person for at least 6 months – this period must include the first Thursday in June
- Living with the person being cared for (or if you do not live with them you must meet certain criteria, for example, the person must be able to contact you quickly and directly)
During this 6 month caring period, you cannot:
- Work more than 18.5 hours per week as an employee or self-employment
- Take part in an education or training course for more than 18.5 hours a week
- Get Jobseeker’s Allowance or Jobseeker’s Benefit
- Sign on for credited contributions
- Live in a hospital, convalescent home, or similar institution
If you are caring for more than one person, a grant is paid for each of them.
If your baby is kept in a hospital or other institution to get medical treatment after their birth, you may qualify for the Carer’s Support Grant. To get the grant, your baby must have a disability that would qualify them for Domiciliary Care Allowance.
Rate of Payment
The Department of Social Protection pays the Carer’s Support Grant at a rate of €1,850 for each person being cared for. It is paid once a year usually on the first Thursday in June. The grant is fully exempt from income tax, PRSI, and USC. Suppose the applicant receives a Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance, they do not need to apply for the Carer’s Support Grant, as the Department will automatically pay it to them every June.
If the applicant does not receive any of these payments, they must fill in the Carer’s Support Grant (CSG1) form for each person they care for and send it to the relevant department with the necessary supporting documents.
