ATNS Bursaries South Africa 2023
ATNS extends an invitation to candidates to apply for their bursary programs for the academic year 2024.
N/B: ATNS provides two types of bursaries to support candidates in pursuing a career in the aviation industry:
- The Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) Bursary: This Bursary supports individuals who play a crucial role in supporting Air Traffic Controllers by handling various tasks like responding to phone calls and utilising radio transceivers for air traffic-related activities.
- The Target Generating Officer (TGO) Bursary: This focuses on supporting operational training by creating simulated live scenarios for controllers, aimed at improving and sustaining their Air Traffic Control (ATC) skills.Responsibilities: Students awarded with this bursary will have the responsibilities of creating and programming training exercises to align with live operational environments.
- They incharge of maintaining operational data and documentation to ensure preparedness for disaster recovery.
- Additionally, bursary students will take part in training for new operational technology, systems, and procedures earmarked for deployment.
ATNS training program phases: - Core Content Course: This is A 21-week theory-based foundation course. The training centre is at ATA in Gauteng.
- ATS Rating Course: This is a practical-based course that complements theory training. Its training centre is in Gauteng.
- ATS Validation: This is a practical module of on-the-job training. The training centre is at OR Cape Town International Airport or Tambo International.
Scholarship Incentives:
- Accommodation by the ATNS ATA at a guest lodge
- Transportation to and from the ATNS ATA, based on study and practical requirement
- Monthly allowance
- Provision of meals, including breakfast, lunch, and dinner each day
- 10 days allocated for non-academic activities, as determined by the study program coordinator
Eligibility Criteria
To qualify for the Air Traffic Services Officer (ATSO) Bursary:
- You must be a citizen of South Africa.
- You have to be 18 years or older at the commencement of your studies.
- You should be currently in Matric (in 2023) or have successfully completed Matric.
- A minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric is important.
- Willingness to relocate anywhere in South Africa.
- You must be medically fit.
- Students with disabilities are to apply and will receive preference by the Employment Equity Plan.
- Students from designated groups, as in the Employment Equity Act of 1998, can apply.
Qualification for the Target Generating Officer (TGO) Bursary:
- You must be a South African Citizen
- You have to be 18 years or older at the commencement of your studies.
- You should be currently enrolled in Matric (in 2023) or have successfully completed Matric.
- Attained a minimum result of HG “D” or SG “C” for pure Mathematics and English in Matric.
- Medically fit candidates are eligible.
- Willingness to relocate anywhere in South Africa is important.
- Students with disabilities are encouraged to apply.
- Candidates from designated groups, as per the Employment Equity Act of 1998, are encouraged to submit their applications.

Bursar Selection Process
The bursary selection process includes:
evaluating personality,
ability tests, a panel interview,
mandatory medical assessment, and verification.
Successful candidates will receive an offer for a bursar contract. Upon admission, the bursar enters into a fixed-term deal. The assignment is contingent upon vacancy availability and aligns with ATNS’ Recruitment Policy.
