About The CSIR Bursary Program- Fields Covered
The CSIR offers merit-based bursaries targeting full-time, unemployed students pursuing qualifications in priority areas such as research, technology development, innovation, and corporate/support functions. The program aims to attract suitably qualified applicants and actively encourages female and black students to apply.

Expenses Covered For The CSIR Bursary 2024

The bursary will provide cover for the following expenses:

  • Undergraduate to Honours level: registration fees,
    Tuition fees, books
    Once-off laptop allowance,

    Living allowance
CSIR Bursary Program- Service Contract and Selection

After graduation, bursary candidates will have an obligation to work for CSIR. They will be expected to fulfill one year of employment for each year of funding received.

Shortlisted candidates will receive contact information and invitations for interviews. Candidates who do not receive any feedback should consider their bursary applications unsuccessful.

CSIR Bursary Program Eligibility

Before applying, applicants must meet the following minimum entry criteria: Failure to satisfy all requirements will result in the application not being considered.

For Undergraduate to Honours studies:
  • You must be a South African citizen.
  • Applicants must currently be in Matric or have completed Matric.
  • Applicants must intend to study full-time toward a qualification in one of the listed fields in 2024.
  • Studying or intending to study at a recognized public university in South Africa is mandatory.
  • Candidates must have achieved a minimum of Level 5 (60%–69%) for English in Matric.
  • You must have achieved a minimum of Level 6 (70%–79%) for Mathematics in Matric.
  • Applicants must have achieved a minimum of Level 6 (70%–79%) for Physical Science in Matric.
  • Passing all university courses registered for the completed study period (if currently studying) is necessary.
  • Full-time employment is not allowed.

For Masters and Doctoral applicants:

  • Candidates must be South African citizens.
  • Applicants must intend to study full-time toward a qualification in one of the Masters or Doctoral fields listed above in 2024.
  • Enrolling and studying at a recognized public university in South Africa is a prerequisite.
  • Passing all university courses registered for the completed study period is mandatory.
  • Full-time employment is not permitted.
  • Applicants must exhibit enthusiasm and self-motivation.
  • Taking ownership and initiative is essential.
  • Applicants must demonstrate good scientific writing skills.
  • Candidate must possess good organizational skills.
  • Applicants must demonstrate good time management skills.
  • Strong communication skills—verbal and written—are necessary.
  • Applicants must have proficient report-writing abilities.
  • An excellent academic record is required.
  • A drive to conduct research is necessary.
  • Self-motivation is expected.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and within a team.
  • Formulating and carrying out research should be within the applicant’s capabilities.
  • Excellent technical abilities are required.
  • Applicants must be able to work well under pressure.
  • Meeting the scheduled deliverables is essential.

– For students under 18: a completed and signed consent form by a parent or guardian to comply with POPI regulations (document available in .docx format)
– For students under 18: certified copy of parent/guardian ID document
