About Allan Gray

Allan Gray is an investment management company from South Africa. The company also has offices in Botswana, Namibia, and Eswatini and maintains a close relationship with sister companies Orbis Investment Management and Allan Gray Australia. Its clients include institutional investors, individual investors, insurance companies, trusts, foundations, and foreign institutions.

Allan Gray Investment Counsel was founded in October 1973 by Allan W. B. Gray. The firm won its first client in 1974. In 1989, Gray set up Orbis Investment Management, an international investment management company.

The firm was incorporated and named Allan Gray Limited in 1992. In 1996, the firm opened an office in Windhoek, Namibia. In 1998, the firm started offering retail investment products. An office was established in Gaborone, Botswana in 2004.

Eligibility for Allan Gray Bursary

  • South African citizen or permanent resident
  • Currently in Grade 11 or completed Matric in the past year
  • Achieved at least a ‘B’ aggregate average (or equivalent) in your most recent final exam
  • Intend on studying a commerce, science or mathematics-based degree
  • Accepted or applied to study at a South African university
  • Come from a household with a combined family income of less than R600,000 per year
  • Fit Allan Gray’s definition of being underprivileged in South Africa

In addition, applicants should demonstrate:

  • Leadership abilities or potential
  • Entrepreneurial flair
  • Perseverance in the face of challenges
  • A curiosity and hunger to learn

The bursary aims to support highly motivated students who have academic potential but lack the financial means to access quality tertiary education. Applicants meeting the eligibility criteria are assessed for their merit and future contribution to South Africa.

Requirements for Allan Gray Bursary

  • A Minimum of 60% in Pure Mathematics OR a minimum of 80% in Mathematical Literacy for final grade 11 results
  • A Minimum average of 70% for final Grade 11 results (excluding Life Orientation)
  • The Applicant must be under the age of 21 in the year of their application
  • The Applicant must be a South African citizen
  • An Intention to study towards a Commerce, Science, Engineering, Law, Humanities, Arts & Health Science (Excluding Medicine, Veterinary Science, and Dentistry) degree at WITS, UJ, UCT, NMU, RU, UWC, SU, UP, UFS, UKZN or TSiBA

What Allan Gray Bursary Offer

1. Applicants with a combined annual household income of R1 million (R1 000 000.00) and below will receive full funding

2. Applicants with a combined annual household income of above R1 million (R1 000 000.00) will receive needs-based funding:

  • Speakers and seminars
  • Workshops
  • Experiential exercises
  • Access to business incubation

3. Potential funding will be communicated to successful candidates after the camp stage

4. Access to business/venture funding via E Squared, an Allan Gray Orbis Foundation sister entity (available to students in the IVC program and graduates depending on business idea viability):

  • Like-minded community
  • Tertiary qualification
  • Responsible thinking and entrepreneurial mindset

Important Note to Applicants

1. All the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation requests will be confidential. The Foundation will not disseminate any personal information unless authorized explicitly on page 15 of this application

2. Allan Gray Orbis Foundation would not solicit funds from candidates

3. Submission of this application form to the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation does NOT automatically guarantee that you ( the applicant) will be awarded the Allan Gray Fellowship.

4. Faxed and/or emailed copies of the application form will NOT be accepted. Please submit the application form in good time to meet the deadline. Application forms received after Tuesday, 30  April 2024, 17h00 SAST will NOT be considered.
