How to Shorten a Video on iPhone (Using the Photos App)

Trimming the beginning or end of a video to remove extra seconds is simple with the Photos app on your iPhone. Follow these steps:Shorten a Video on iPhone

Step 1: Open the Photos app and select the video you want to trim.

Step 2: Select the video you would like to shorten

Step 3: Tap the ‘Edit’ option in the upper-right corner.

  • Make sure you’re on the video tools and use the timeline under the video to move the arrows and trim the beginning or end.
  • A series of still photos, separated by arrows, will be displayed.
  • A timeline of the video will appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap and hold on either end of the timeline and drag it inwards to shorten the video.

Step 4: Preview the changes by using the seeker or tapping the ‘Play’ button.

Step 5: Once you’re satisfied, tap ‘Done’ and choose between ‘Save video’ or ‘Save video as a new clip’.

Note: You can revert the changes at any time by tapping ‘Edit’ and then ‘Revert’. But be aware that the edits will be permanently lost and you’ll need to start again.

How to Shorten a Video on iPhone ( Using the iMovie App)

If you want to trim the middle of a video, the Photos app won’t help, but iMovie is the best choice. iMovie is a video editing tool from Apple and you might already have it on your iPhone. If not, you can find it on the App Store.

To use iMovie:

Step 1: Open the app and select “Start a New Project.”

On the Home screen, tap to open the iMovie app.

Tap Create Project.

Step 2: Choose “Movie” and select the video you want to edit from your camera roll.

Tap to select Movie.

Step 3: Load the video in the editor and tap the video timeline to select it.

  • The video will be highlighted with a yellow border and a toolbar will appear at the bottom of the screen.
  • Trimming the ends of the video:
  • “Trimming the ends of the video is similar to the Photos app – just drag the corners of the yellow box inward.”
  • Trimming in the middle:
  • “First, split the video by selecting the “Actions” tool (Scissors icon) from the bottom toolbar and tapping “Split.”

  • “Then select the clip with the part you want to trim and drag the border inward.”
  • “If you trim too much, use the “Undo” button to start over.”
  • Repeat the trimming process for each part of the video you want to trim.

  • Once you have finished editing, tap “Done” in the upper-left corner and then the “Share” button at the bottom to export the video from iMovie.

  • You can save the video to your camera roll or share it on other platforms.
