About The Bursary Provider

The government established the South African electricity producer Eskom in 1923. Eskom is known to be the biggest electricity producer in Africa. It ranks among the top 7 global utilities in terms of generation capacity. Eskom produces nearly all of the electricity used in South Africa, accounting for 95% of the electricity. Approximately 45% of the electricity used in Africa also comes from Eskom.

The company has power stations in various South African locations, including the Kendal Power Station and Koeberg Nuclear Power Station. Also, Eskom is a publicly traded company listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange with the BIESKM ticker.

Eskom Bursary Program 2024

Every year, Eskom offers a bursary to some students who want to or are currently studying engineering. The bursary aims to encourage students to realize their full potential in the engineering field. Eskom also created the bursary scheme to help improve the South African labor market, as more skilled engineering professionals will be required in the future.

Eskom is providing bursaries for the 2024 academic session to 35 students in the following fields of study:

Bursary for University studies (B Eng / BSc), the following are considered:

  • Mechatronics Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering (Heavy Current and Light Current)
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Civil Engineering
  • Chemical Engineering

Bursary for the University of Technology studies (Diploma), the following are considered:

  • Electrical Engineering (Light Current and Heavy Current)
  • Chemical Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering

Eligibility – Eskom Bursary Requirements

The bursary provider sets certain requirements for applicants to be eligible for the Eskom Bursary. Applicants must satisfy these requirements, or else failure to do so can deter their chances of getting awarded the bursary. The requirements are as follows:

  • The bursary requires applicants to be citizens of South Africa.
  • Applicants must enroll in the Matriculation program in 2023.
  • Applicants must acquire a minimum of Level 4 in English in their eleventh-grade finals.
  • Applicants must acquire a minimum of Level 5 in Pure Mathematics in their eleventh-grade finals.
  • Applicants must acquire a minimum of Level 5 in Physical Science in their eleventh-grade finals.
  • Applicants must intend to pursue one of the listed qualifications in 2024.
  • Applicants must receive conditional acceptance to attend a recognized and accredited university in South Africa.
  • Applicants must not register at any tertiary institution or receive any other financial assistance.
  • Eskom may consider candidates from underrepresented categories in compliance with its employment equality plan, equity goals, and targets.

Note: The bursary gives more consideration to students with disabilities than other applicants. However, it prioritizes applicants from underrepresented designated groups.

How To Apply

Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements set by the bursary provider can apply for the award. Interested applicants will have to follow the application process.

  • Applicants must own an Eskom account, which they can achieve by registering. After registering, they will need to log in and apply.
  • The Eskom Bursary 2024 application form will require applicants’ personal information such as academic details and contact details. Applicants should carefully read the provided instructions before filling out the form.
  • Eskom will contact selected applicants within 28 days of the bursary application closing date. If Eskom does not contact an applicant within this timeline, the applicant should consider their application unsuccessful.

The bursary application will require applicants to provide necessary documents for verification purposes. Applicants who do not provide these documents will have their applications canceled. The required documents are as follows:

  • Identification documents (Certified copy)
  • Grade 11 final results (Certified copy)
  • Matric latest results (Certified copy)
  • University registration proof on the university’s letterhead

Eskom Bursary 2024 Closing Date

Interested applicants must submit their applications for the Eskom Bursary before 31 January 2024, which is the closing date for online applications in 2024. Eskom will not consider applications submitted after the deadline.
