Eligibility – HWSETA Bursary Requirements
Applicants applying for the undergraduate or postgraduate bursary program will have to meet the following criteria before applying. Failure to meet these criteria can lead to disqualification of your application. To qualify, applicants must:
HWSETA Undergraduate Bursary:
- Be a South African citizen and resident
- Currently in Matric or have completed Matric
- Be studying or plan to study towards undergraduate degrees
- Be studying or plan to study at an accredited tertiary institution in South Africa
- Be taking Mathematics and Science as subjects in Matric if you are currently in Matric
- Have obtained a Matric exemption with Mathematics and Science as subjects if completed Matric
- Have obtained a minimum overall average of 75% in your previous year of study
- Meet the entry requirements set by HWSETA Bursary 2025 and the tertiary institution
- Not be a staff or a promotional partner of HWSETA
- Not receive any other bursary funding
HWSETA Postgraduate Bursary:
- Be a South African citizen
- Be a full-time student undertaking Honours, Masters, Doctoral, and Post-Doctoral studies at South African universities.
- Be studying or undertaking studies in the Health and Social Development areas
- Have a minimum average of 65% in your previous qualification
- Applicants with disabilities are encouraged to apply
How To Apply
Applicants will have to visit the HWSETA career website to download their application form. Ensure you fill out the correct information on the form. Submit your completed application along with all supporting documents on the bursary portal. The following are the supporting documents required:
For Undergraduate Bursary:
- South African ID document
- Matric certificate
- Full tertiary academic record
- Proof of application/ registration at the university
- Motivational letter
For Postgraduate Bursary:
- South African ID document
- Proof of registration at the institution
- Draft research proposal
- Itemized and presented project budget
- Letter of motivation
Then, applicants will have to make a 30 to 60-second video about why they deserve the bursary. The video should be at most a one-minute time frame.
You need to publish the video on any of your social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter); tag @hwseta_sa, and use hashtags #HWCareerBursaries and #HWCareers. Candidates can apply only once, and upon submission of the video, applicants will receive an email confirming their entry.
Initially, 5-10 finalists will be selected based on your application. From these finalists, two will move to the vetting stage. Winners will be contacted by phone and email. Successful candidates must sign a bursary contract. Remember, the selection process is competitive. Focus on submitting a strong application to increase your chances.
